Randall completed his degree in Agriculture, studying first at the University of Adelaide and then at the University of California – Davis, before embarking on a career on his family grain growing properties on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. He spent many years growing wheat, canola, faba beans, and lentils for international markets before being selected as a 2016 Nuffield Scholar to explore the visibility and participation of women in the Australian grains industry. This research involved interviews with over 60 women globally across various sectors, including broadacre and livestock farming, agribusiness, education, and policy development. Randall was the Syngenta Australia / New Zealand sustainable farmer of the year in 2016 before being offered a role in the Grains Research and Development Corporation, an industry funded organization responsible for investing in R&D across the Australia grain sector.
After several years in this role, Randall moved into the environmental sector, firstly working within a team revegetating the road corridor with native species along the National Highway and then managing a team responsible for collecting, cleaning, and packaging native seeds across Australia, with a focus on the South Australian rangelands.
The opportunity to work within Select Carbon allowed Randall to continue his interest in native landscapes, engage with landholders and travel extensively to more remote areas of Australia while working within a really fantastic team of people. The role encompasses field monitoring of vegetation across outback stations, Australia wide, working with Select Carbon’s environmental planting team and managing interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
In his after-work hours, Randall works with his partner, managing properties in South Australia and New South Wales, growing grain, pastures, breeding Shorthorn Cattle and Australian Stock Horses, and planting trees to revegetate nonproductive areas.
