Remote Sensing and Data Science Manager

Belen is an Argentinian Environmental Engineer (Honours) who has always been interested in the efficient management of natural resources and improving people’s quality of life. She found that sustainable development projects combined these two passions and led her professional career on this path.

At the moment, she has over eight years of work experience leading and implementing projects including:
Optimization of oil wells waste management and monitoring the environmental impact of O&G companies.
Driving energy efficiency by capturing biogas from the water treatment of a manufacturing plant of ABInBev.
Reducing the waste tracks frequency in Buenos Aires, applying design thinking to drive cultural change.
Implementing alternative energy sources on towns without a network connection.

She came to Australia with a scholarship to study a Master of Geographic Information Systems (Honours) at the University of Western Australia, which complemented her engineering background with spatial analytical and modelling tools. She graduated with high distinction (6.9/7 GPA). Her research thesis included modeling water processes on the urban environment to predict the impacts climate change and urbanization have on urban stormwater processes and present a new management approach to store water and reduce urban floods.

Belen joined the GIS team at Select Carbon and works quantifying land-use change and forest cover over time through a combination of satellite imagery algorithms, statistical analysis, and geographical information systems.
